This programme provides an overview of the traditional arts and music of the multicultural societies in Malaysia. The music of the indigenous Malay, different ethnic groups of Sabah and Sarawak are truly exotic and enchanting. As for the Chinese and Indians, the traditional music of their homelands has become part of Malaysia’s culture and heritage too. This course will introduce students to Malaysian musical instruments, repertoire, performance practices and history. Students will also experience playing selected music genres such as Kompang, Dikir Barat, Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet Play), Caklempong, and Malay Gamelan. Modules on Chinese and Indian music will be included.
